Research

Zahra Upal is a Master’s student at the University of Calgary. She is examining racism and discrimination faced by Muslim nurses in Canada. She also shares her own experiences as a hijab-wearing registered nurse and how it shaped her focus. She is passionate about human rights, multiculturalism and social justice. Zahra’s nursing experience is focused on Community Health Nursing, with experience working with the indigenous community, performing home visits with diverse clients including newborns and their mothers and over 5 years working as a Nursing Instructor at the University of Calgary. Zahra has taught courses on health promotion, community health and nursing leadership. 

She received the Alberta Human Rights Commission’s 2021 – 2022 Pardeep Singh Gundara Memorial Scholarship, the Alberta Registered Nurses Educational Trust Gayle Hissett Memorial Scholarship, as well as the Canadian Nurses Foundation Tylenol Masters Award. 

Zahra has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Anthropology and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta. She is based in Calgary, Alberta.
